Immediate Dentures

Dec 21, 2016

Have you been told that you need your teeth extracted, and you need an immediate denture to replace them? In this post I will attempt to explain what an immediate denture is and explain the process involved. Our Denture clinic can help guide you on your immediate denture journey.

WHY DO WE USE IMMEDIATE DENTURES?

When a person has to have their teeth extracted, immediate dentures allow for the patient to have their new dentures to wear immediately following the extractions. The minute the teeth are extracted the new denture goes in.. The process starts with impressions of your natural teeth prior to the extractions. The Denturist is then able to use your natural teeth as a guide to fabricate your immediate denture. If your natural teeth are in poor shape, modifications can be made to compensate for this, creating a natural looking smile.
When your natural teeth are extracted, your immediate denture is then inserted. Many patients prefer this method so that they are never without teeth at any time.

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT IMMEDIATE DENTURES

With immediate dentures it can be difficult to attain ideal aesthetics as the existing natural teeth prevent us from trying the teeth in ahead of time to confirm aesthetic results. This is due to your denture being made prior to the extractions of your remaining teeth. While your mouth is healing your denture may feel loose and may cause irritations. The reason for this is, your remaining bone is shrinking and remodeling at a rapid rate after the extractions. This usually doesn?t present any significant problems, and the results are normally quite good. This is a normal process that all people go through after extractions. This process tends to occur more rapidly for the first 6-12 months after the extractions and eventually slows down over time. To keep you comfortable during this time temporary liners or tissue conditioners are used in the dentures to make up for the receding tissue. This will help keep your denture fitting and functioning comfortably. After 6-12 months the immediate denture can be relined with a permanent material to make up for the changes that have occurred in the mouth, or in some cases a final set of dentures can be made to replace the immediate dentures.
